« You fucked with the wrong generation ». Les mots du chanteur de Fever 333 annoncent belle et bien la couleur de ce nouvel opus. Le groupe originaire de Los Angeles, connu et reconnu pour son engagement, ses convictions et ses concerts explosifs, revient en réponse à 4 années de gouvernance catastrophique et quelques décennies d’injustice et d’inégalités toujours présentes et pesantes. Pour l’anecdote, Jason Aalon Butler, chanteur de Fever 333, a passé 13 jours à manifester en réaction au décès de Georges Floyd. Le quatorzième jour, il l’a passé chez lui à composer les racines de Wrong Generation. Cet album est donc clairement une réponse, une contre-attaque. Bite Back.

« I woke up on the morning of George Floyd’s murder, and I was struck with a sense of pain, frustration, sadness, and fear about what it means to exist as a black person in America… ». Fever 333 a posé les bases de cet album sur 34 années de questionnements, d’inquiétudes, de peur et de colère. Il ne s’agit clairement pas d’une démarche musicale de premier plan, mais plus d’un engagement artistique réactionnaire. « This project is art as activism first ».

Wrong Generation est composé de 8 titres oscillant musicalement entre du Beastie Boys west coast énervé et du Rage Against The Machine originel. A l’écoute, j’ai la sensation d’être face à un album punk mêlé à la rage du hardcore et la composition hip hop. C’est très agréable à écouter si on s’intéresse aux sons violents sur couche émotionnelle.

Parmi ces 8 titres, on retrouve quelques bombes qui n’attendent plus qu’à exploser. Je pense à Wrong Generation, You Wanted A fight et Walk Through The Fire Together. Ces chansons jouent à faire monter la pression. Les paroles sont répétées entre cris, hurlements et chants. La musique balance entre hip hop, punk et metal. On attend seulement l’explosion, qui d’ailleurs ne tarde jamais à venir puisque cet album est une contre-attaque, le soulèvement d’une génération unie autour d’un même dégout. « You Wanted A Fight, Well You Got One ».

Mais il y a aussi des morceaux en feu, de véritables missiles musicaux qui n’attendent pas une seconde avant de tout envoyer. Là, je pense à Bite Back et For The Record dans lesquels on se retrouve directement pris par la rage et la violence qui en ressort. Ces morceaux te prennent aux tripes sans aucune concession possible. L’offensive est en place.

Block Is On fire est le titre le plus hip hop de l’album. Un beat assez simple, répété et régulièrement rythmé par les basses. Malgré tout, ce morceau pourrait aussi être placé dans les bombes à retardement. « L.A Is Burning », « Tables Are Turning ».

Enfin, après avoir été bien remonté par les 6 premiers titres, l’EP laisse place à The Last Time et Supremacy : deux titres à part. Le premier sonne comme le générique d’une scène triste et fait ressortir toute la mélancolie d’un événement aussi tragique que le mort de Georges Floyd. Le second clôture l’album sur une note rock/hip hop épicée, très agréable.

J’oubliais de préciser que les 8 chansons étant quasiment toutes sous la barre des 3 minutes, l’album file à un rythme effréné.

Fever 333 signe ici l’une des meilleures choses qu’il m’a été donné d’écouter cette année, voir depuis très longtemps. Merci pour ça. Ce disque scintille au milieu du chaos. Il représente le soulèvement d’une génération unie et devrait être écouté par le plus grand nombre. « You Fucked With The Wrong One ».

« You fucked with the wrong generation ».The words of Fever 333‘s singer tell us what it’s about in this new record. Based in Los Angeles, the band, known for their commitment, their beliefs and their explosive shows, is back after 4 years of disastrous governance and decades of injustice and inequalities, still occurring and cumbersome. Jason Aalon Butler, singer for Fever 333, spent 13 days protesting, following Georges Floyd’s death. He spent the fourteenth day starting to write « Wrong Generation« . This album is clearly a response, a counterattack. Bite back.

Fever 333 laid the foundations of this album upon 34 years of questioning, concern, fear and anger. The musical approach in not on the foreground, it comes mostly from an artistic and reactionary commitment. « This project is art as activism first ».

Wrong Generation is composed of 8 tracks oscillating between the Beastie Boys‘ angry west coast sound and initial Rage Against The Machine. With this EP, I feel like I’m listening to a punk record mixed with the rage of hardcore and hip hop melodies. It’s a pleasant listen if you’re into violent sounds with an emotional touch.

Among these 8 songs, we find a few bomb tracks waiting to explode. I have in mind « wrong generation », « you wanted a fight » and « walk through the fire together ». These songs increase the pressure. The lyrics are repeated sometimes shouted, screamed or sung. The music oscillates between hip hop, punk and metal. We just wait for the explosion which never fails to come because this album is a counterattack, the uprising of a generation united around the same disgust. « You wanted a fight, well you got one ».

But there are also some fire tracks, real musical rockets that cannot wait a single second to go full blast. I’m thinking of « bite back » and « for the record » in which we’re immediately caught by the rage and violence that stands out. In these tracks, there’s no room for concession, the attack is ready.

« Back on fire » is the most hip hop track of the EP. A pretty straightforward beat, repetitive, punctuated with bass notes. Nevertheless, this song can be filed in the time bombs category along with « L.A. is burning » and « tables are turning ».

Finally, after getting wound up by the first 6 tracks, the EP ends with « the last time » and « supremacy », two distinct tracks. The first one sounds like the end credits after a sad scene and brings out the whole melancholy of the tragic event of Georges Floyd’s death. The second one concludes the record on a spicy rock/hip hop note, very tasty.

I forgot to mention that almost each of the 8 tracks last less than 3 minutes, the album goes by fast.

Fever 333 put out one of the best records I’ve heard all year, if not in a long while. Thank you for that. This record shines in the middle of the chaos. It represents the uprising of a generation and should be listened to by everyone. « You fucked with the wrong one ».
